Creating Impact Through Art: The Autobahn Carwash Mural
Do Something Cool has partnered with Autobahn Carwash to launch “Keep On, Keeping On,” a transformative initiative rooted in resilience, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of long-term goals. This project celebrates the indomitable human spirit by sharing stories of individuals who have overcome significant challenges, embodying grit—the ability to maintain effort and interest over time despite setbacks and adversity.
Inspired by the story of Nick "The Manimal" Custer's story, the project seeks to raise awareness about the life-saving importance of seatbelt safety while directly raising funds, 100% of which will go to supporting individuals on their own journeys to recovery.
Anchored by a vibrant mural created by California based artist Chris @heihn merging impactful messaging with artistic expression, this project underscores the value of safety, resilience, and community support, all while celebrating the power of grit in overcoming life’s greatest challenges. Together, we’re turning adversity into art and making a lasting difference.
Overall project aims include:
- Promoting Seatbelt Safety: The mural serves as a constant reminder of the critical importance of buckling up to save lives.
- Supporting Local Business: Run Autobahn Carwash promotions, helping to boost business and contribute to the economic vitality of the St. Charles community.
- Empowering Resilience: By sharing Nick’s story and highlighting the power of grit, we hope to inspire individuals to "keep on, keepin' on."

The Manimal: Nick Custer’s Road to Recovery
Nick “The Manimal” Custer embodies the spirit of resilience, perseverance, and grit. In 2013, his life took a dramatic turn when his truck hit an icy patch on Highway 94, veered off a bridge, and landed on the highway below. Without a seatbelt, Nick suffered catastrophic injuries. Rushed to Mercy Hospital, he was given just three hours to live and later told he would never walk or talk again.
But for Nick, it’s not the size of the fall that defines you—it’s how you pick yourself back up. Defying all odds, he turned those grim predictions into a story of triumph. After waking from a five-week coma, Nick faced countless challenges, from relearning how to walk and talk to rebuilding his life. Through sheer determination and grit, he proved the experts wrong and reclaimed his independence. T

Nick’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit to overcome even the greatest adversity and journey is more than a personal victory; it’s a rallying cry for others facing their own challenges.
His coined phrase, “YOLT” (You Only Live Twice), is a powerful reminder to embrace every moment and turn setbacks into opportunities for growth.

Today, he thrives as a homeowner and devoted dog dad to Cheeba, inspiring everyone around him with his mantra: “Keep On, Keeping On.By sharing his incredible story, Nick shows that with grit, determination, and an unshakable spirit, anything is possible.
